Made it!
We’re finally in Cairo after a good 20+ hours of traveling. Nothing too eventful happened on the flights other than they gave us chocolate at the end of the Zurich to Cairo flight and I left it in my pocket with my mp3 player… gooey mess!
We met a nice Egyptian guy who lives in the states but was on his way to visiting his family in Zurich. We got him to write out the Arabic numerals and to phonetically give us a few phrases to help us on our journey.
The tour company picked us up from the airport without a hitch (Thanks Lindsay!). There don’t seem to be any driving rules here, people where driving anywhere and anyhow. It doesn’t matter that there are pillons blocking a lane, just go in it until you catch up to whatever the pillons are for! We got to our hotel and it was in fact the right one (SCORE!).
After we settled in and watched a bit of a soccer game in Arabic we headed out in search of food. Along the way we passed at least 2 goat herds along the main road (WTF?!?) they had shepherds keeping them in line and everything! We both forgot to bring a time keep device so we looked for that and only found dead ones. We found a small convenience store and bought some bread and fig jam, mmm mmm.
We ended the night hanging out on the rooftop to the hotel trying cantaloupe sheesha!
The plan for tomorrow is to check out downtown Cairo, wish us luck!
